Application
Vegetable glycerin is a versatile ingredient used in the production of skincare cosmetics: creams, lotions, lip balms, soaps, and many others. It acts as a natural humectant that helps maintain optimal skin hydration. It dissolves fats and lipids well, supporting the creation of stable emulsions.
Usage and Dosage:
Vegetable glycerin is typically added to the water phase during the formulation of emulsions or water-based products such as toners, gels, or essences. The recommended concentration ranges from 2% to 10% – at lower levels (2–5%), it works as a gentle humectant, ideal for lightweight moisturising products like facial mists, light creams, or formulas for oily skin.
Higher concentrations (6–10%) are recommended for intensively moisturising products such as body lotions, hand creams, masks, and cosmetics intended for very dry or dehydrated skin.
In formulations, glycerin can be combined with other moisturising agents (e.g. aloe vera, hyaluronic acid, panthenol) as well as emollients (e.g. jojoba oil or squalane), which help lock in moisture and prevent excessive water loss from the skin.
Mode of Action
Vegetable glycerin (glycerol) forms a protective film on the surface of the skin, reducing water loss through the epidermis (known as transepidermal water loss), thereby providing intense hydration and smoothing effects.
It also supports skin elasticity and brings a feeling of softness and comfort.
Regular use of cosmetics containing glycerin improves the condition of dry, rough, and dehydrated skin.
