Ceramides. Why and How to Use Them

Ceramides are found in the epidermis and are responsible for its protective properties. In simple terms, they protect the skin and hair from the harmful effects of the external environment. Additionally, they maintain proper skin hydration, influence its integrity and firmness. Ceramides make up about half of the lipids in the outermost layer of the skin, known as the stratum corneum. By nourishing the skin with ceramide-based products, we strengthen its protective barrier, prevent dryness and dehydration, and also support collagen synthesis in the skin.

Here is a summary of the effects of ceramides:

  • hydrate dry skin and prevent water loss,
  • renew, repair, and firm aging skin,
  • reduce lines and wrinkles,
  • improve the integrity of the epidermis – protect against photo-damage, surfactants, stress, and low humidity,
  • in hair care, they protect the hair while improving its shine and mechanical properties, such as texture and ease of detangling.

How to use them?

  • Add to daily cosmetics – creams, masks, or body lotions (in a concentration of up to 10% of the cosmetic’s volume),
  • Add to facial toner or dilute with water or hydrolate as a face and body mist (concentration up to 10%),
  • Add to shampoos, conditioners, and strengthening hair treatments (concentration up to 5% of the cosmetic’s volume),
  • Active ingredient in homemade soap (concentration up to 10% of the soap base, to be added after the base has cooled to below 40°C).
